Delta College to host world-renowned author and speaker on autism

This could be Delta College's biggest speaker event yet.

Delta College will host the world-renowned author, professor, and presenter Dr. Temple Grandin as part of its President’s Speaker Series. Dr. Grandin is the most accomplished and well-known author with autism in the world, according to the college.

Two talks are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 14.

"Dr. Grandin's appearance has generated greater advance interest than any other speaker we have ever had," says series coordinator Dr. David Baskind.

"Her first-hand knowledge of autism as both a scientist and someone diagnosed with it gives her a truly unique perspective."

A professor of animal science at Colorado State University, Dr. Grandin is also an animal behavior, welfare, and handling equipment design consultant to the livestock industry. She is a world-renowned author and speaker on autism.

Dr. Grandin’s achievements are many.

Time Magazine named Dr. Grandin as one of 2010’s 100 most influential people in the world. She has authored more than 400 articles and six books, two of which were bestsellers. Dr. Grandin was inducted into The Women’s Hall of Fame in 2017 and named a fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2018.

A TED Talk titled The World Needs All Kinds of Minds is available online.

Actress Claire Danes even played Dr. Grandin in the HBO movie Temple Grandin, which won seven Emmy awards.

"Dr. Grandin is the most prominent name in the field of autism," says Dr. Baskind."The fact that Delta College is able to bring a speaker of this caliber to our area is a great gift to the community."

The President’s Speaker Series with Dr. Temple Grandin will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. in the Pioneer Gym and at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Theater at Delta College.

Both events are free and open to the public.
