$30,000 Grant Lands Impression 5 Science Center an Ethanol-Fueled Van

Impression 5 Science Center has new wheels. The white Chevy van runs on corn-based E85 fuel, says Erik Larson, center director.

Armed with a $30,000 grant from the Lansing Rotary Foundation, the center picked up the van from Shaheen Chevrolet, and then plastered images of corn cobs all over the hood.

Vision Creative provided the wrap-around drawings also showing comical people making green slime and doing other things the center is known for. Central Michigan Graphics applied the full vehicle decals.

As the van makes its way to and from schools and festivals, it will be carrying things like its Van de Graaff generator, the electrostatic machine that makes people’s hair stand on end; Lego robotics kits; and a trebuchet, a Medieval catapult that can hurl a gallon-container of water 200 feet, resulting in a very big splash.

And oh, yes, also on board would be the ingredients for slime: polyvinyl alcohol, Borax, water and food coloring.
