Morey Courts puts out call for players in its new basketball league for high school girls

A new basketball league is starting at Morey Courts Recreation Center.

A month before the rec center celebrates its ten year anniversary, Morey Courts is looking for players to join its new all-girls house league. High school aged girls are being encouraged to register for the twelve game season.

The season is scheduled to begin Sunday, Sept. 16. Registration is available online.

Morey Courts organizes the league and assigns players to teams. It is not a travel league and all games are held at the Mt. Pleasant facility.

"House leagues get kids out of their comfort zones. You come in and play with different people," says Dan Nealy, Facility Manager at Morey.

"There’s no coaches on the benches so you see leadership skills start to develop. You see them become more vocal, learn how to make decisions and how to be a better teammate."

The popularity of a boys house league helped lead to the decision to start a similar league for high school girls.

The facilities at Morey Courts Recreation Center include eight basketball courts, three racquetball courts, two tennis courts, and a fitness center.

"This gives girls the opportunity to get twelve games in in the fall, get a basketball in their hand," Nealy says.

Morey Courts Recreation Center is located at the Isabella Community Sportsplex at 5175 E. Remus Rd. in Mt. Pleasant.
