A new restaurant is opening in east downtown Dearborn. Peacock Indian Cuisine, a fine casual dining restaurant that mixes generations of traditional Indian recipes with modern fusion dishes, is set to open its doors on Thursday, July 19 at 11 a.m.
Peacock's owner Akaash, who requested his last name be withheld, learned how to cook Indian cuisine from his father, who himself learned his recipes from his own father. Three generations of Indian recipes will be on the menu at Peacock. Akaash has experience cooking at his family’s restaurant in Northville.
Akaash calls his restaurant fine casual dining. Customers will walk in, order at the counter, take a number and sit, and a professionally plated dish will be brought out to them. The reason for this, he says, is efficiency.
"We want to get people their food more quickly. There aren’t a lot of Indian dining options nearby. If we did full-service dining, we’d have a line out the door all day," Akaash says.
"This is the smartest way to get high-quality food while making the customers happy."
The menu includes items that range from the traditional, like samosas and chicken tikka masala, to Akaash’s take on Indian fusion, like paneer tikka fries and gulab juman cheesecake.
During the work week, Peacock will feature a lunch bar. Patrons order their entrees at the counter and then help themselves to a mix of appetizers and sides while they wait.
Peacock opens in a two-story building on Michigan Avenue. The first floor renovation is complete, with bright white walls and custom blue trim. The second floor will serve as an events space for parties, or, depending on demand, a second dining room.
"We opened here because the people of Dearborn are craving Indian food," Akaash says.
