6 art summer camps in Detroit and Ann Arbor for your creative kid

From finger painting to sketching to sculpting, there’s no shortage of art programs and camps for your creative child. Whether they want to learn the basics or perfect their skills, there’s a camp in metro Detroit and Ann Arbor for them. Here are a few highlights:

1. College for Creative Studies

Each summer class at College for Creative Studies is designed to feed the curiosity of creative minds. Classes range from studio- to digital-based courses for several age groups and provide a supportive learning environment where kids can let their creative sides shine. Classes are for kids ages 6 to 12 at the CCS Taubman Center campus. Pre-college programs are also available for students ages 13 to 19.

2. Birmingham Bloomfield Arts Center

The BBAC offers something for every age group. Offerings include pre-college sessions for kids grades 9-12, middle school sessions that allow campers a variety of different studio art experiences, grades 1-5 sessions where students rotate by age group to different studio classes, and preschool through kindergarten classes where campers learn to use their imaginations.

Cranbrook Art Museum offers art-intensive summer camps and workshops to students entering grades 1-9. Teaching artists guide students as they create and explore art, architecture, and design using Cranbrook's amazing collections.

4. Detroit Institute of Arts

The DIA offers kids an innovative studio art program in a museum filled with world-class art. Typical projects include clay masks, multimedia puppets, painted portraits, imaginative drawings, and wood sculpture. Kids also exercise skills in interpreting art while exploring the galleries. By the end of the 5-day camp, everyone will have a personally meaningful portfolio they can share with family and friends. This camp is offered to youth ages 5-12.

5. Pewabic Pottery

Being a nonprofit ceramics studio, Pewabic offers all kinds of classes over the summer, including figure sculpting, wheel-throwing, jewelry making, and much much more. The classes are for both beginners and advanced students. Whether seasoned or just curious, Pewabic has something for everyone.

Ann Arbor Art Center's camps are creative, fun, and packed with activities. These art camps are designed to cultivate cognitive development through hands-on art projects that leverage collaboration, experimentation, critical thinking, and problem solving.
