Costello Design Group makes a name and jobs for itself

While most companies want to grow big and strong, Bill Costello wants his to stay small and lean. The president of Costello Design Group only has two employees after nearly a dozen of years of designing websites and web applications, and until recently that's been just fine with him.

"We've kept it small because that's where we are and that's what works for us," Costello says. "It keeps us busy. There is no one sitting on our bench twirling their thumbs."

But when you're successful growth becomes inevitable. Costello Design Group expects to hire a couple of people within the next few years as they continue to attract clients. Costello also is looking to buy a building in Grosse Pointe Park within the next year or so to facilitate this expansion.

"We like the community," Costello says. "We like the attitude, the people and the businesses in Grosse Pointe. We have a lot of big clients here and they enjoy having us close by."

And that's a lot closer than where Costello Design Group started. Costello originally formed the company in Champaign, Ill. in 1996 when the Internet age was just starting to crawl into the main stream. It moved to Metro Detroit in 2000 where it develops websites and applications for those websites for major corporations.

But Costello is enjoying staying small for now. There is plenty of work to go around and he hopes there will be enough soon that he can make the big leap of doubling the employee base but keeping things personal.
