Golfers to raise money for Midland kids, safety

Safety glasses and golf may seem like an odd pairing.

But an annual golf outing on July 15 at the Swan Valley Golf Club in Saginaw will raise money to supply Midland's building trade students with safety glasses, safety training, and other items.

The "Safety for the Kids" Golf Outing, sponsored every year by the Great Lakes Safety Training Center, was responsible for raising about $10,000 last year. The center is a Midland-based non-profit charitable organization that also provides workplace and occupational safety training for contractors. Participants in the golf outing are local businesses and contractors who are members of the center.

The hope is to raise more money this year so that the center can expand the safety program to the rest of the Great Lakes Bay region, says Ty Krauss, marketing and membership coordinator for the center.

"We want to grow it, but we want to extend it," he says.

The center approaches high school building trade instructors to find out what their needs are for that school year, he says. "We try to do as much we can to fill that needs list that they have."

The center also is looking to create a scholarship program for individuals who want to pursue safety as a profession.
