College Corner opens, linking Alma downtown to college

There have been changes in downtown Alma, as College Corner Coffee and Books prepares to open. On the corner of Wright Avenue and Superior Street, in the former Kentwood Pharmacy, the new store, owned by Alma College, will serve as a link between the downtown and the college campus.

College Corner will have a grand opening ceremony at 3 p.m. Sept. 23, at which the public is welcome. As you might suspect from the name, coffee and books are staples at the new store, which also offers general merchandise, campus apparel, and hosts the newly re-opened Stucchi’s Ice Cream Shop.

“College Corner symbolizes our ongoing efforts to more closely link the college with the downtown area, to broaden learning and community service opportunities for our students, and to help our community thrive in a challenging economic environment,” says Alma College President Jeff Abernathy. “This is a facility for everyone in our community, whether it is to enjoy a sandwich or ice cream treat at Stucchi’s or peruse the books, apparel and other items available in the bookstore.”

In December, the Alma College bookstore also will move to College Corner; the college bought the building in January in order to relocate the bookstore there, and to act as a new home for Stucchi’s, which burned down last October.
