Delta College gets $10 million for health center building

Delta College is getting a good chunk of change from the state for its much-needed renovation of the Allied Health Capital Building.

The state approved $10 million in funding to renovate the building, which houses Delta's allied health and nursing programs. Several programs will be affected by the upgrades, including the radiology, microbiology, dental, nursing, respiratory therapy and surgical technology programs.

"We're very pleased that as we move into our 50th year of serving the needs of students and the community, Delta will be able to enhance that learning environment for our students enrolled in health related programs," says Jean Goodnow, president of Delta College.

Some specific elements of the project include a health promotion and awareness clinic, multi-discipline simulation rooms, a critical care simulation area, and a multimedia laboratory and video slide room.

Delta College has been waiting for the funding a good long while, as the last time they received state funding for a building project was 12 years ago.

The $10 million will cover about half of the construction costs, but the college is now in the planning process to raise the rest of the money, which they expect to be much easier with the initial state funding to work from.

About 30 percent of Delta College's nearly 16,000 students are enrolled in health-related programs.
