CMU hires new dean for college of communications

With more than 25 years of experience under her belt, Janet Hethorn comes to Central Michigan University as the school's new dean of college communication and fine arts.

Her responsibilities will include leading five academic departments and schools as well as overseeing three interdisciplinary programs.

Hethorn knows higher education inside and out, coming to CMU from the University of Delaware where she was the director of the Delaware Design Institute, which she founded in 2009, and professor of art. She has been with Delaware since 1998 when she joined the art department as a professor and department chair.

Hethorn earned her doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota with a focus in design. Before that, she earned bachelor's degrees in home economics education and textiles and clothing from Central Washington University.

Hethorn will officially begin her new role at Central come Aug. 1.
