Kelli Mason, local salon owner celebrates five years in Downtown Midland and a growing business

After nearly 11 years in the industry as a stylist, Kelli Mason, the owner of Lux the Salon in Downtown Midland, opened her original space in June 2013, on a dream to run and own her own salon. After several years of success, the salon officially celebrated their five-year anniversary party in late November along with a holiday gathering.

The business has grown and changed over the years more than Mason could have ever imagined. She expanded the salon taking over the neighboring unit, remodeled and along the way she has worked her way up in various parts of the industry. She worked as a National platform artist and educator with Surface Hair for seven years before going off on her own to start her own independent education platform for hairdressers with a focus on personal development and mindfulness.

Lux the Salon is still going strong as part of the business mix, Mason has quickly expanded her offerings and skills including a blog, podcast, an e-book, coaching and mentoring offerings for other hairdressers, training and technique classes and a training regime called The Limitless Hairdresser.

She has stretched herself professionally as well, entering the in the North American Hairstylist Awards (NAHA) several times and was a finalist in the 2017 Behind the Chair (BTC) #ONESHOT Hair Awards in the Waves and Curls category, which drew more than 25,000 applicants.

Mason has taken what she has learned and created a training platform for independent hair stylists that were interested in furthering their education, but may not want to train traditionally under a salon brand, as most stylists’ training was historically done.

She now educates for The Limitless Hairdresser out of her salon as well as travels to other cities nationally offering the course at host salons. Her impact has been broad, reaching more than 15 cities in 2018 and several engagements planned for 2019. The training and teaching process has connected her with so many bright stylists of all backgrounds. It has helped launch and grow other parts of her business as well, like podcasting to reach other stylists internationally that may not have the immediate resources to travel, but can learn from her years of education remotelyMason has grown beyond the salon to run her own independent education platform, The Limitless Hairdresser..

“It’s been over five years since I decided to open my own salon in Downtown Midland and we have since expanded and changed so much,” said Mason. “To this day, opening the salon has been one of the best decisions I’ve made and acts as a platform for the business. While we call Midland home, the experience of traveling, competing in national-level events and styling for New York Fashion Week, has made it possible to expand to what the business is today.”

“It has all been a blessing and next year we are looking at adding to our team, and I will be teaching, mentoring others and continuing to expand The Limitless Hairdresser offerings.”

Lux the Salon’s holiday and anniversary party is Thursday, November 29 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. and will feature discounts on product bundles and makeup and more than $500 worth of door prizes.
