For years, the city has grappled with decrepit buildings across Battle Creek, reports the Battle Creek Enquirer. Many of the buildings are unoccupied homes that blend into their surrounding neighborhoods, but sometimes they are local landmarks that stand out. The procedure is one tool the city uses to pressure property owners to make repairs to blighted buildings. Minor issues can be handled with citations for code violations, and in major cases the city can step in and make repairs or even tear down problem buildings.
