Treats on the street: New ice cream peddling business comes to Algonac

Starting this summer in Algonac, you won’t have to brave the local grocery store’s freezer aisle to snag your favorite iconic ice cream treats. Now, those tasty frozen snacks can come to you.

Husband and wife Danny and Liz Walker recently launched Ice Box Novelties, an ice cream peddling business which currently services the Algonac community.

“Ice Box Novelties is fun and nostalgic,” says Liz Walker. “You hear the music and you know what's coming…you can count on your go-to ice cream treats like the famous Choco Taco, strawberry shortcake bar, snow cones and screwballs. We bring a fun spin on it by pedaling our bike, fully equipped with a freezer full of treats, and blasting those earworm-ice cream truck tunes.”

Ice Box Novelties will be peddling only in Algonac in the coming months, but as they work out a regular schedule they plan to expand to other areas and cater events. All of the frozen treats are priced under $5 and if you hear them coming, there’s no need to scramble to find cash. Ice Box Novelties accepts electronic payments.

They say the inspiration for the business came when Danny was off of work due to a fall on the job during the winter. While recovering from his injury, Danny says he saw an opportunity after coming across a photograph from when he was an ice cream peddler in Port Huron years ago.

“I wanted to invest in something that would give back to the community,” says Danny Walker. “When I was a peddler in Port Huron, the joy I was spreading by merely parading through the neighborhood was overflowing, and that is exactly what I believe Algonac needs as we somewhat return to normal and welcome in the summer.”

“Algonac is where we both grew up,” says Liz Walker. “It's where a lot of our family and friends are, it's where we both found our faith, and it's where we will raise our family. The town is full of heart, spirit, and good, hard-working people. Algonac has given so much to the both of us, and we want to be able to give back to our community.”

In addition to balancing Ice Box Novelties, the couple both work full-time jobs. Over the next few months they will be peddling only in Algonac, but as they work out a regular schedule they plan to expand to other areas and also offer event catering.

“We always focus on our ‘why’ — it's the best way to remind us when it feels like a struggle, that it's all worth it,” says Liz Walker. “Bringing fun and joy to our community, building something that excites people, and peddling that nostalgia.”
