Three U.P. projects get historic preservation awards

The 2012 Governor's Awards for Historic Preservation have been announced, and the U.P is what you might call well-represented on the list, garnering three out of the six statewide awards for Michigan.

A collaboration including the Keweenaw National Historical Park, Quinn Evans architects, Yalmer Mattila Contracting, Inc. and the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission was honored for the rehabilitation of the Union Building in Calumet.

In Escanaba, the Lofts on Ludington project, a rehabilitation of the Richter Brewery, was honored, with recognition going to developers Swanee, Incorporated and Barry Polzin Architects.

"As first time developers, we are honored to receive the 2012 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. We would like to thank Governor Snyder, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and the State Historic Preservation Office for this award.  We are grateful to have had the opportunity to bring this historic landmark back to life as The Lofts on Ludington. We believe the success of this project is the direct result of the unfailing support we have received from First Bank, Escanaba City Manager Jim O’Toole, and our community," says Matt Sviland, co-developer of Lofts of Ludington.

A downtown renovation of the Adams and Masonic Temple buildings in Sault Ste. Marie was the third U.P. awardee, to G.A. Haan Development, U.P. Engineers and Architects, and Oakwood Construction.

The other three awards went to projects in Boyne City, Lansing and East Lansing. The awards will be presented May 2 in Lansing.

The award program has been around since 2003, and previously has honored projects like the Riley Mammoth Site in Saranac, the rehabilitation of the Northern Michigan Asylum and Point Betsie Lighthouse, both near Traverse City, and the Argonaut Building in Detroit.
