National Trust awards preservation grant to Friends of Braumart

The Braumart Theatre in Iron Mountain is a step closer to a historical restoration thanks to a $2,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The theater support organization Friends of the Braumart received the grant on behalf of the historic theater on B Street, which currently is the city's performing arts center.

The money will go toward creating a feasibility study on restoring and renovating the venue, which the group wants to restore because of its history and architectural significance to Iron Mountain.

Engberg Anderson, Inc., a Milwaukee architectural firm, has already been chosen to conduct the study.

"This grant helps fund the important first steps in the revitalization of the Braumart -- the market feasibility study and the architectural/engineering/structural analysis," says Jinx Brew, who is the board president for Friends of the Braumart.

The grant is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's National Trust Preservation Funds grant program, which distributes small, local grants up to $5,000 that must be matched with public or private funding. They are awarded to nonprofits, educational institutions and public agencies and can be used for studies like the one planned at the Braumart, consultant services, technical assistance, tourism assistance and history education.
