Lansing-based Accident Fund Insurance Company of America is extending its reach into Texas and Maryland, bringing the number of states in which it writes workers’ compensation policies to 18.
Noting that the number of businesses it insures is up 1.7 percent through May
compared to the same time last year, Matthew Haran, spokesperson, says the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan subsidiary continues to hire.
As of July 1, five jobs in Lansing were posted on the company’s web site. Four of the five jobs required college degrees. A system support technician would need a high school diploma or GED and several years of experience.
Accident Fund as an enterprise, including the United Heartland and CompWest subsidiary companies, has 1,094 employees nationally, with 594 in Lansing.
According to the company’s annual report for 2008, it achieved an underwriting profit for the 11th time in the 14 years since it became a private company.
But 2009 may not look as good. Decreased payrolls throughout the economy are taking a toll, since workers’ compensation is based on payroll. But Accident Fund’s four percent drop from last year’s level is less than industry predictions of at least seven percent, Haran says.
“So while we’re down, we’re still doing better than the industry as a whole.”
Meanwhile, the company continues to grab industry awards, most recently two from the ACORD User Group Information Exchange recognizing the insurer’s facility in information exchange with agents.
