The University of Michigan Board of regents approved construction of a new indoor football practice facility and new soccer fields.
The new $26.1 million facility will be constructed on practice fields adjacent to Schembechler Hall on South Street. The 104,000-square-foot building will house a full-size football field, lobby, restrooms and storage space. It will replace the nearby Oosterbaan Field House, which will be used by other University varsity and intramural events.
The project will also renovate 3,000 square feet of space in Schembechler and add another 20 parking spaces. Troy-based architectural firm Jickling Lyman Powell Associates will design the building, which is being paid for by donations and athletic department funds.
The university will also build a regulation competition soccer field for its men's and women's varsity squads just west of the university's tennis complex on South State. The $2-million project, funded by the university's athletic department, also includes two practice fields and will be designed by Ann Arbor-based landscape architectural firm JJR.
Construction schedules for both projects have not been set yet.
