Hurry up and wait. That's been the situation with the construction of the new home of the Bianchi's Salon & Spa in downtown Royal Oak.
Although the site has been cleared and the foundation laid, the single-story building (in the shadow of the 10-story Main North Lofts structure) has yet to peak above the ground. That looks to change this spring when the development team plans to start raising the building at 723 N Main St. by as early as March. Construction is expected to take eight months.
The structure will be 4,200 square feet of commercial space. Of that 3,000 square foot will be put aside for the salon while the remaining 1,200 will be available for lease. The building also features a mezzanine overlooking the salon portion, giving the structure 17-foot ceilings in spaces.
"It's an all-brick building with very clean, modern lines," says Jim Schneider, president of Royal Oak-based Schneider+Smith Architects who designed the structure. "It's kind of picking up on the pattern of the building stock in Royal Oak but with more clean, minimalist lines."
Schneider+Smith Architects has also done design work for the renovations of the Luke and Tribune buildings in downtown Royal Oak. They have also designed a number of restaurants in the city's central business district, such as Pronto!, Woody's and the Comet Burger.
