Urbane Apartments goes green with latest rehab

Lots of developers are jumping onto the green-building bandwagon these days, saying they’re doing it because it’s "the right thing to do to for the planet," not to mention their pocket books. Whatever the reason it's an innovation that's become more and more mainstream.

But the people behind Urbane Apartments have a bit more gravitas when they make the claim of environmental consciousness. The Royal Oak based-company specializes in renovating old apartment buildings in downtown areas, reusing old structures while letting people live lifestyles that require smaller carbon footprints.

On top of that the firm is moving forward with a project that squarely emphasizes its green features -- Urbane on Center Street. Urbane Apartments spent $900,000 turning an ugly apartment building from the late 1960s into a modern hippie’s abode.

The developers installed ENERGY STAR appliances, motion sensor lights, water-saving faucets and energy efficient lights, along with bamboo floors and carpets made of recycled material. In addition there are modern touches such as wireless Internet, glass balconies and stainless steel accents.

"It's the right timing," says Diane Sawinski, director of marketing and leasing for Urbane Apartments. "There are certain products that are available at certain costs that make this economically feasible."

The building’s newly refurbished 31 units are available starting at $850. The building is located on Center Street between 6th and 7th streets within easy walking distance of downtown Royal Oak. There will be an open house Saturday.

Urbane Apartments owns and operates eight buildings, is renovating a few more and ready to close on yet another in downtown Ferndale. For information on Urbane Apartments offerings or Saturday’s open house, call (248) 988-7125.
