App creator Bickbot aims for big name co's

Henry Balanon has always wanted to run his own company. The problem of being laid off nearly two years ago provided him with that opportunity, so the recent Michigan State University graduate created Bickbot, a company that makes smart phone apps.

"I thought I could go after another job or follow my dream so I tried it," Balanon says.

Today, the West Bloomfield-based firm has a team of three people and a stable of independent contractors. It has created a number of apps, such as Strokes for golfers and a speech timer. Bickbot is now focusing on making apps for companies, such as a scrapbooking app and another for Farmington Hills-based Mango Languages.

Balanon is restructuring Bickbot and creating a board of advisors so he can focus on scoring more work from bigger corporations. He sees this path as a way for some explosive growth for his company that could lead to more than a dozen hires by the end of next year.

"We could make really large stuff for really large brands," Balanon says.

That move could grant him the dream of being his own boss and moving away from software consulting.
