New idea to boost Michigan's economy: Illegal fireworks!

The state is on a mission: Bring in revenue, somehow, short of illegal. Well, not too illegal. Take for instance fireworks, of the unlawful kind. They might not be unlawful soon. To raise money, state government is looking at ways for businesses to sell illegal fireworks, charge that business an illegal firework fee, and bank a little extra cash. Hey, whatever works. And besides, fireworks are cool.

MORE FIREWORKS? Fireworks illegal in Michigan could be sold to raise money for the state government under legislation the House Appropriations Committee passed Thursday. Businesses that sell the fireworks would be charged a fee, raising about $2.6 million to preserve fire protection grants. Democrats say they'll introduce legislation needed to legalize the fireworks, and the budget will be cut if the plan isn't enacted.
