Twitter can improve your social life, but the region, too?

You might be quick to say that Facebook and Twitter keep people glued to their computer screens. But that's really not the case. They are coming out to meet face-to-face, building real relationships and not just virtual ones.

Never more than an arm's length away from their smartphones or computers, metro Detroit's most active online enthusiasts are on a mission.

The result has been an increasingly busy calendar of face-to-face get-togethers, ranging from tea-fueled brainstorming sessions to fund-raisers for dog lovers.

The most active is Tweetea, a weekly confab of some of the Detroit region's biggest cheerleaders at a tea shop in Royal Oak.

It's about "getting to know your neighbors, building real relationships with people," said Hubert Sawyers III, 29, of Grosse Pointe Park. "Come from behind the computer and really get to know each other."
