Detroit is known as a place where things are made. This looks like it will turn out to be a good thing when the world economy recovers and demands more products from the U.S.
Excerpt:
"Focusing on national aggregates, however, overlooks the fact that just as the American economy is not the same everywhere, neither is the recovery. The MetroMonitor, an interactive barometer of the health of America's metropolitan economies, looks "beneath the hood" of national economic statistics to portray the diverse metropolitan landscape of recession and recovery across the country. It aims to enhance understanding of the local underpinnings of national economic trends, and to promote public and private sector responses to the downturn that take into account metropolitan areas' distinct strengths and weaknesses."
Detroit ranks ninth among 100 of the nation's largest metropolitan areas in terms of 2008 exports, $26.9 billion; as well as fifth in export-related jobs, with 239,910 area residents producing goods and services for export.
