Free basic training for prospective business owners, entrepreneurs

Lack of capital and know-how about business basics are common barriers to would-be budding entrepreneurs.

But some upcoming training sessions offered by the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC) office at Delta College can help Mid-Michigan's aspiring small business owners.

"Fundamentals of Starting a Business" training seminars offer basic information and resources to people who are thinking about starting a business, says Christine Greve, regional director of the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center (MI-SBTDC, Region 5) office at Delta College. The Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center -- a partner program of the U.S. Small Business Association -- provides one-on-one counseling, training sessions, and market research to new, existing, and expanding businesses.

"Fundamentals of Starting a Business" training sessions, which are held several times throughout the year, will be offered next month in Midland (July 15), Bay City (July 21) and Standish (July 29). Courses also will be offered on Aug. 19 (Saginaw), Aug. 24 (Cass City), Sept. 2 (Midland), and Sept. 10 (Bay City). Pre-registration is required for the sessions, which are free.

Those who participate in the program are then eligible to take their business training to the next level in a fee-based, 9-week course called FastTrac NewVenture, which begins Sept. 17. FastTrac NewVenture is a "boot camp" program sponsored by Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Centers throughout the state.

People who attend the training sessions learn what it takes to start a business, and why having a business plan is so critical. Licensing and permitting requirements, the challenges of obtaining funding, and where to find business resources in their communities also are covered in the sessions.
