For Kathleen Perkins patina means "time created beauty" and that's what she's named her store in downtown Paw Paw.
The consignment, resale, arts and crafts business opened its doors with a mission to provide quality merchandise at an affordable price.
"I never intended to start a business," says owner Kathleen Perkins. "I wanted to help defer expenses on the building."
She had owned the the building and hoped to sell it after retirement but after it was on the market for several years, Perkins says it became time to find a use for the building so it could help pay for itself.
Prior to opening, she was approached by many friends, family and acquaintances who thought the building would be a great location to sell furniture, jewelry, home decor, children’s clothing; artistic creations and so more. Perkins, formerly employed in the health field, had no background in retail but did not let that stop her.
After some market research in the surrounding area, Perkins decided to take the next step and obtain the financing necessary to move forward.
Fifth Third Bank officials encouraged her to meet with
Cornerstone staff for assistance in developing a business plan for the project. With plan in hand, Perkins obtained the financing she sought.
Patina opened in August and now has consignments from 60 people in the 2,000-square-foot retail space. So far Perkins is its sole employee, although those selling their goods there voluteer their time. Patina grossed more than $5,000 in its first month of business and had good month in September as well.
"It's fun and exciting to exceed your goal," Perkins says.
• Patina’s hours of operations are: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m Thursday; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday: and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The store will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays. For more details and information, call at 269-657-8396.
