Solar racers show off their expertise on stop in Kalamazoo

For the first time in more than 20 years of solar racing, the American Solar Challenge route made a stop in Kalamazoo this week. The 1,600-mile cross country race started July 14 in Rochester, N.Y. The 18 teams from the nation's top engineering schools are running the race. Teams traveled through the downtown and out to WMU's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences on the Parkview Campus for a mid-day stop. Each team was to spend at least an hour in Kalamazoo to give  the public an opportunity to get a close-up look at all the competing cars. The break gave the drivers a chance to cool off the solar cells, change tires and rest or exchange drivers if needed.
