Lake Superior State University will have a new home for its school of business soon, as reconstruction of the college's historic South Hall has been approved by the state.
The refurbishment is planned to cost $12 million, with $9 million coming from the state of Michigan and the other $3 million from private donations to LSSU. The new South Hall is scheduled to be open for students in the spring of 2015.
"We now have full approval for the state's share of the funding for the renovation of South Hall, and we expect to start the project on our original timeline," says LSSU President Tony McLain. "This was the only state building authority-financed construction that was approved this year, and it will be the university's first major capital project in more than 10 years."
The project includes renovation of the current building, which has original sections from the early 1900s. Infrastructure, classrooms and offices will be upgraded. Then, a 12,000-square-foot addition will connect the two original wings of the building and create an atrium containing a commons, café, new program rooms and support space.
The architect and engineer are Cornerstone Architects of Grand Rapids, and the construction manager is DeVere Construction Co.
