New businesses open doors in Marquette and Houghton

If you can't be open in time for the summer Upper Peninsula tourist season, the next best thing is to be open in time for Christmas, and that's the story for several new storefronts in Marquette and Houghton this month.

Katherine Jarvi Photography opens in Marquette

Located on Third Street, a new photography studio is serving Marquette residents. Owner Katherine Nichols is an award-winning photographer who will be running her own photography studio, Katherine Jarvi Photography, at 420 N. Third Street, Suite 2.

Nichols recently held a ribbon cutting along with the Lake Superior Community Partnership to celebrate the studio's opening. She specializes in portrait photography, including weddings, families, children, newborns, couples, models, businesses, and senior photos.

Katherine Jarvi Photography is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can also be found online.

Lemon's Studio changes hands

Longtime downtown Marquette photography business Lemon's Studio Photography has a new owner.

Daniele Carol Miljour, already the owner of Daniele Carol Photography, has taken over as the head of Lemon's, and will combine her own studio with the older Marquette business. Located in the Lemon's storefront at 617 N. Third Street, the new enterprise will be called Lemon's Studio by Daniele Carol.

Lemon's has been known for their wedding and senior portrait photography, and Miljour will continue to offer those services as well as newborns, birthdays, family photos and other events.

Houghton gets a sushi restaurant

Fans of good food in the Houghton area have a new spot to try out -- and from all accounts so far, it won't disappoint.

Sky Sushi celebrated a soft opening at the end of September and is located at 401 Shelden Avenue, across from Swift's True Value. They offered up a buffet-style dinner so new patrons could try a variety of Sky Sushi's dishes, but typically, the menu is that of a more traditional sushi restaurant and includes both dine-in and take-out options.

The menu includes sushi, sashimi and maki rolls along with other items like appetizers and ramen dishes, and has gotten good reviews from customers so far.

Cornerstone Masonry and Tile holds ribbon cutting

Two Marquette entrepreneurs have opened a new local contracting company for masonry and tile work. Cornerstone Masonry and Tile is owned by Chris Graham and Wilbur Jennings and serves the central Upper Peninsula from their home base in Marquette.

Cornerstone recently held a ribbon cutting with the Lake Superior Community Partnership to mark the start of their new business. Graham and Jennings will be offering expert-level masonry, tiling and concrete placement services in the area.

They can be contacted via phone at (469) 271-0622 or by email for more information.
