Houghton businesses get facade grants

Four buildings in downtown Houghton will get new facades under a block grant to the city.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation awarded the city of Houghton $640,811, which will be matched by $216,104 in funds from the recipient businesses.

The funding comes through the Community Development Block Grant program and is one of seven new MEDC projects announced, and the only one in the U.P. All told, they total $111 million, though most of the rest are loans rather than grants.

The other projects are located in Cass City, Detroit, Grand Rapids and Boyne City, although the Boyne City grant actually also is good news for a Sault Ste. Marie company, Precision Edge.

Charlevoix County received $350,000 in CDBG funds for job training to go along with Precision Edge's planned $2 million expansion in Boyne City. The development will create 30 new jobs, 16 of which are to go to low to moderate income workers.
