University of Michigan faculty and staff got a chance to see what's happening in Sault Ste. Marie this spring. The Sault was one of seven stops throughout Michigan where the Michigan Road Scholars spent time.
If you haven't heard of the
Road Scholars, imagine a workshop or seminar where you travel all over the state on highways and back roads, learning about each place you visit from history to modern economic development. University of Michigan selected faculty and staff did just that, as they have done for the last 13 years.
In Sault Ste. Marie, that included a panel presentation at the historic Ramada Plaza Ojibway Hotel, and discussions with folks from the
Sault Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sault EDC.
"We were delighted to be selected as a destination by the Road Scholars," says Al Case, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce. "This was an excellent opportunity for faculty from one of the nation's premiere institutions to learn more about our community and region. The event provided insight as well as opportunity for collaboration between our community and the vast resources of the University of Michigan."
The Road Scholars also stopped in Benton Harbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Mackinaw City and Traverse City. The program's goal is to increase knowledge of the people and communities of Michigan, increase understanding of university connections throughout the state, cultivate awareness among U of M faculty of the attributes of the state, and to encourage public service and research on problems the state faces.
