When on Isle Royale, just go with the flow

Nature has a way of playing havoc on your plans. From wacky weather to fallen trees to blizzards, twisters and more, Mother Nature has her say in the Upper Peninsula. That's why, as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently noted, it's best to just go with the flow when in the thick of it up here--especially when it's on Isle Royale.

Before we even caught the ferry to the rocky island in the middle of Lake Superior, Mother Nature threw our carefully planned backpacking itinerary into disarray.

The day before our departure, we stopped briefly at the visitors center in Houghton, Mich., to ask a fishing question and learned that two lakes where we wanted to camp were basically closed.

Uh-oh.
