A California couple has offered to pay for a professionally designed entrance to the Lake Michigan beachfront at the Second Street and Lions Park Beach in St. Joseph, the Herald-Palladium reports.
The project would honor Richard Kiesel, a longtime public servant and volunteer. His son, Mark Kiesel, is a St. Joseph High School graduate who lives in Newport Beach, Calif. He and Erika Lowe own properties at 1006 and 920 Lions Park Drive and had offered to make a donation for improvements to Second Street and Lions Park Beach in honor of his father.
City leaders then suggested that Kiesel and Lowe make their donation toward improving beach access. This $100,000 project, part of the city's recreation plan, had been shelved because of budget constraints.

The plans call for an entry sign and low bollard lighting at Second Street and Lions Park Drive, and a 12-foot-wide pedestrian walkway leading to the beach path. The street would be paved and would remain a public right-of-way but would no longer be available for parking.
