Warren Dunes visitors can learn science of the shoreline

The park office of Mike Latus is a veritable museum, with items ranging from pelts to fossil samples from the Lake Michigan shoreline, reports the Herald-Palladium. The state hires Latus for the summer to run nature programs -- like ones on dragonflies, damselflies, fossil hunts and star gazing through three 6-inch reflecting telescopes -- for campers and share nature information with beach patrons.

"People ask me if we have a nature center, and I'm it," says Latus, an outdoor explorer guide, who has been explaining the area's natural wonders to park visitors since 1994.

During summer weeks, Latus leads hikes to examine insects, birds and wildflowers. On weekends he performs afternoon and evening programs that can include fossil hunting, story-telling and more trail hikes. "Around the campfire we watch the sunset and listen to Indian legends and ghost stories," he says.
