5 local bars to catch the Irish spirit

If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, less green beer-y to do this St. Patrick’s Day, why not gather your friends and enjoy a few of the Bluewater area’s best pubs, bars, and breweries? There are, of course, several to choose from, but here are a few of our local favorites. Wait! Before you get started, don’t forget to celebrate responsibly, and have a designated driver.

Let’s start at War Water Brewery in the Riverview Plaza in St. Clair. They open at noon and will kick off the day by offering their first production canning run of their Training Day American Ale (in green cans, of course). All day long, Big River BBQ will be catering traditional Irish food, and March Madness will be playing on all 10 big-screen TVs. At 5 o’clock, small teams will compete in a pumper pull, and then at 6 o’clock, they’re hosting a keg toss, both as fundraisers to support local firefighters. From 2 o’clock until 11, Alex Shire and Jim & Pete Meldrum will be providing live entertainment. There will also be hourly giveaways, and special edition T-shirts for sale, also supporting the firefighters.

Before we leave St. Clair, it’s time to check out Murphy Inn, open from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. and dedicating its entire menu to Irish fare, including Irish bangers and cole cannon mash, corned beef and cabbage, and Irish nachos. They’ll have a bagpiper and other live entertainment, and Irish whiskey and an assortment of beers (along with green beer), as well.

Continue the pub crawl by heading north, to Harsens Island Brewery, in Marysville (not on Harsens Island). They’ll be open at 11 o’clock, and will be serving Irish food specials all day, including corned beef. On tap? A variety of stouts.

Let’s also make a quick stop at Lynwood Bar, and try some of their Irish stew, or corned beef and cabbage. They’re open from 7 a.m. until 2 a.m.

There’s no better place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than a traditional Irish Pub, and we happen to have one of our own, right in the heart of downtown Port Huron.  Lynch’s Tavern is the perfect last stop on our pub crawl, opening at 9 a.m. and featuring live entertainment throughout the day and well into the night. As in years past, Lynch’s plans to offer a special setup, making it easy for celebrants to get their drinks and food without a long wait.

If you’re not able to make all the stops on the St. Patrick’s Day pub crawl, no worries: these five Bluewater area attractions are worth a visit all year long. Cheers!
