Oakland University athletic department students got a big win at a recent Detroit Pistons game for their charitable efforts raising money for the Lighthouse of Pontiac.
The Pistons and Genisys Credit Union honored the OU students at center court on February 16 at a Detroit Pistons game at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The students raised $2,598.99 and
459 pounds of food for Lighthouse of Oakland County in Pontiac as part
of the Summit League’s annual "Food Fight" food drive. A representative
from both the Pistons and
Genisys presented a
check for $1,000 as an additional contribution. The honorees also wore
shirts that said "Be a Game Changer" to create awareness of the positive
commitment that Generation Y individuals in Michigan have made to their communities.
Summit League
schools have teamed up to fight hunger by designating 20 "Food Fight" games during the
basketball season as part of the league-wide food drive. At the end of
the "Food Fight" schedule, the school that raises the most amount of
food, measured in pounds, will be awarded The
Summit League Food Fight trophy. The Summit League and its member
schools raised a combined total of 35,000 pounds of food in the first
two years of the program.
The Pistons organization and Genisys launched the Making a Difference
program to recognize Generation Y volunteerism. Once a month, a local
group is selected and honored on court at a Pistons home game. The
criteria for being a recipient is being a Generation Y individual that
demonstrates acts of social responsibility, faith-based charity, acts of
valor, or extraordinary mentoring. Generation Y is typically defined as
the generation between the ages of 18 and 25 years old. Nominations can
be made at Pistons.com for a chance to be recognized on court.
