Construction begins on redevelopment of this historic building in downtown Marshall

What’s happening: The repurposing of an 1880s-era building in downtown Marshall has begun in earnest, with demolition crews clearing the way for a reimagining of the historic structure as a multi-use event space. The redevelopment is the latest from Sue Damron, who has spent the past five years reinvigorating downtown since her purchase of the legendary Schuler’s Restaurant in 2019.

What’s planned: The building at 112 N. Eagle St. in downtown Marshall has been vacant since Dreamers Furniture closed up shop here in 2008. That will soon change once work is complete on 19 Zero 9, a multi-use event space designed with weddings, corporate events, and other special occasions in mind. Planned amenities include a 250-seat capacity reception hall, a soft-seating reception area, bride and groom’s quarters, three boutique-style hotel rooms, and more.

What they’re saying: “We’re excited to revitalize this significant historic structure,” reads a statement from Sue Damron, president & CEO of 19 Zero 9 and Schuler’s Restaurant. “With an anticipated early 2025 opening, bookings are now being accepted for future dates. We invite community members and visitors to follow our progress, stay updated through our social media channels, and visit www.19Zero9.com for more details.”

Backstory: After working for the company for more than 20 years, Sue Damron purchased the historic Schuler’s Restaurant & Pub in 2019. Since then, Damron is responsible for not only renovating the restaurant and pub but also spearheading efforts to convert upstairs office and storage space into seven mixed-income residential units and five boutique hotel rooms, the latter of which is now branded as The Royal Hotel. Damron also developed the Hyde Away, an off-site outdoor events venue in rural Calhoun County, in 2020.

Schuler’s synergy: The 19 Zero 9 name comes from Schuler’s, which itself first opened in 1909. The two businesses, which are located less than two blocks apart, will be closely intertwined, with Schuler’s providing staff and exclusive catering services to the new event space.

19 Zero 9 is located at 112 N. Eagle St. in downtown Marshall.
