What’s happening: A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a completed Phase II of Grass River Natural Area’s Boardwalk Reconstruction Project has been announced for 1 p.m. on Friday, May 23. The Antrim County nature preserve celebrates several enhancements to the 1.5 mile-long floating boardwalk that winds through its protected wetlands.
What it is: The Grass River Natural Area is a 1,502 acre nature preserve protecting Antrim County’s Grass River and its northern fen and cedar wetlands. The preserve counts seven miles of trails and 1.5 miles of boardwalk among its amenities.
What’s being celebrated: The ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrates an approximately $1 million renovation project for a 0.39-mile section of its floating boardwalk, a project that was completed in late 2024 and under budget. Enhancements include two new observation platforms, a new bridge over Finch Creek, a larger dock at Grass River, an accessible kayak launch, and a new boardwalk surface that measures 6 ft. wide.
Why it’s important: “Antrim County is incredibly proud to have partnered with Grass River Natural Area on this vital project,” says Antrim County Administrator Jeremy Scott. “The completion of Phase II of the boardwalk will enhance accessibility to and experience of Grass River’s natural beauty for all residents and visitors, ensuring its enjoyment for generations to come. The dedication of Grass River Natural Area, Inc., along with the community’s support, has been instrumental in achieving this success.”
No place like home: The Grass River Natural Area was formed in 1969 as a grassroots effort to protect local wetlands, a vital habitat for 49 mammal species, 147 bird species, and 400 species of plants. Bobcat, snowshoe hare, ruffed grouse, and ermine are among those species that call the Grass River Natural Area home.
What they’re saying: “Now visitors of all abilities can experience the beauty of a cedar forest, stunning views into protected wetlands, and safe crossings of Finch Creek, a cold water stream feeding the Grass River,” says GRNA Executive Director, Jenn Wright.
Grass River Natural Area is located at 6500 Alden Hwy. in Bellaire.
