Family-owned business The Attic Finds is set to expand offerings

Bob and Aime Horn, owners of The Attic Finds and General Store in Fair Haven, attribute having their son Toby to the decision to change the direction of their careers.

With his woodworking skills and her eye for creative decorating, in 2013, Bob Horn left behind his landscaping and maintenance business, and his wife said goodbye to her career in retail management. The couple began painting and repurposing furniture and collecting home decor and gifts in their barn, eventually opening a small 500-square-foot shop called “The Attic Finds Barn Boutique” in early 2014.

Six months later, the couple expanded their business leasing their current location allowing them three times more space in the 1930 historical building just a few minutes from their home.

“It’s a family-run mom and pop shop,” says Aime Horn, with Pop woodworking and sanding, and Mom putting her refinishing touches on the unique pieces of furniture. Now 19 years old, Toby Horn also helps out the business by arranging all of the furniture in just the right places to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere for shoppers.

The Horns believe in working hard and staying humble and say, “Believe you can” is their motto.

The Attic Finds has grown over the past few years and now includes a consignment program providing space for 17 local vendors with hand-made items including soaps, hand-painted art, wreaths, and signs. The Horns say sticking to Michigan-made products is a priority, and enjoy supporting their community by including locally-produced honey, jams, popcorn, granola, and canned pickles.

The Horns say they are excited to become the community’s old-fashioned go-to general store and are in the process of obtaining their licenses to be able to also offer farm-fresh produce, eggs, and chicken meat.
