Shop owner celebrates one-year business anniversary with purchase of the Goddeyne building

Like many of those who grew up in and around Bay City, Jodee Mitrzyk has a deep affection for what’s referred to locally as the Goddeyne building. The L-shaped building, which has storefronts on both North Johnson and 3rd streets, has been the source of Bay City memories since it was built in 1908.

Jodee Mitrzyk, who has practiced yoga for nearly 27 years, opened Traveling Light Yoga in the old Goddeyne Building one year ago.Mitrzyk owns the Striped Canopy Consignments & Home Décor store and the Traveling Light Yoga studio, both of which are located within the Goddeyne building. She says customers are always telling her stories about their own memories there, like getting their bikes repaired at the old bicycle shop.

The most popular memory recalled is the old tradition of Santa Claus at Goddeyne, an event that would cause lines to wrap around the block, she says.

Mitrzyk’s own history with the building is deep itself. She first opened the children’s clothing consignment shop Lil’ Muffins and a Bun in the Oven there in 2008. She sold the business after three years to raise her family; it would stay open another five.

She opened the furniture consignment shop and yoga studio in November 2018, returning to the building of her entrepreneurial roots. Today she’s celebrating another milestone; Mitrzyk has entered a purchase agreement to buy the Goddeyne herself.

"I just love this location. This area of Johnson Street is an intimate section of small businesses and I’ve always enjoyed our neighbors," Mitrzyk says.

"And I love this building, the character of it. Everyone knows this building growing up in Bay City."

Striped Canopy is a furniture and home décor consignment store, featuring a furniture painting workshop in the back.

Mitrzyk, who has practiced yoga for nearly 27 years, opened the yoga studio after years of offering yoga lessons elsewhere. She’s hoping to enact a zoning change that will allow her to use the studio as an events space for showers and other parties.

And she’s considering bringing Santa Claus back, too.

Striped Canopy Consignments & Home Décor store and the Traveling Light Yoga studio will celebrate their one-year anniversaries with an open house and cheese-and-wine anniversary reception on Nov. 9.

Striped Canopy Consignments & Home Décor is located at 1103 N. Johnson St. and Traveling Light Yoga is located at 1701 3rd St. in Bay City.
