Sarah Anthony loves her 1920's, Harlem Jazz-inspired loft in
Old Town, and chose that location because it "has a big city feel."
The
Central Michigan University (CMU) alum returned to Lansing to work for State Representative Joan Bauer in the Michigan State Legislature. She teaches dance, serves on a number of community boards and organizations, and is thrilled to be a part of the rebirth of Old Town.
Drinks and Dinner
For dinner and music Anthony swears by
Gumbo and Jazz in East Lansing. "The owners are amazing hosts and make you feel at home the moment you enter the building," she says. She loves the smooth music and amazing authentic New Orleans food, and she strongly recommends sampling their unique take on mac 'n cheese.
Another spot that satisfies her cravings is
Vernadine's Soul Food in Old Town, serving soul food standards such as greens, ribs, and fried catfish. "The price is also very reasonable," Anthony adds.
Shopping
When talking about shopping, Anthony likes to quote Carrie Bradshaw of
Sex & the City: "Shopping is my cardio." She loves
Grace, a small boutique in Old Town that carries big-name designers. She likes how there are always new things coming in, diminishing the likelihood of 10 people showing up in her frock at a gathering.
For clothing, purses, hats and other random items, Anthony heads to
Vintage Palooza, an antiques, clothing and accessories shop located in Old Town where she always finds "a classic piece" to fit her design style.
Music and Nightlife
For live Jazz, Anthony likes to check out
621, located at 621 Michigan Avenue on Thursday nights. But also notes that about once a month—on Mondays—Soul Out presents spoken word poetry, neo soul, funk, R&B, and jazz. "That night is amazing and brings in young talent from across the state," she says. "You almost forget that you are in Lansing, rather than downtown Chicago."
For karaoke, Anthony goes to
The Exchange on Thursday nights. It's the only bar that features karaoke with a live band. "You'll find everyone from pseudo-professional rockers to tone deaf virgins to the mic."
Hangout Spots
Anthony's not a huge coffee drinker, but she does like to frequent the
Grand River Café. The interior is very unique, as it combines homey and hip. She likes the fireplace, where you can warm up in the wintertime, and the tall fountain (it's as high as the ceiling), where water flows down between two sheets of glass. "There are always a lot of students. And it's quiet, but you can still socialize." Plus, she adds, they have "really good smoothies."
"
Edru Skating Rink," she says, "is a great place for 'older young people' to go out and make a fool of themselves." It's your classic roller skating rink (although you can also rent roller blades). Those who don't wish to skate can hang out or play arcade games.
To chill, converse, and relax Anthony visits
Sir Pizza in Old Town. The rehabbed factory-turned-pizza joint offers wireless access and a great view of the river.
