Lansing entrepreneur Sarah Haubert recently quit her full time job to put all of her energy into her new business, Lansing Companion Animal Service.
Through Lansing Companion Animal Service clients hire Haubert to care for their animals while they’re on vacation or at work. Depending on the needs of the pet, Haubert may visit the animal up to four times a day for an hour each visit and if she can, she does it by bike.
“So far it’s been really successful,” she says about her business. “The environmental concept is something that I’m really passionate about. The more I thought about driving to all those people’s houses and burning all of that gas, it seemed like a really terrible idea. I thought about doing it on bike and realized that was doable.”
If an animal is sick or old, Haubert drives her car so she can be prepared for an emergency. So far, her business is doing well.
“Once I launched, the response was unbelievable,” she says. “There was one day where my phone was literally ringing off the hook. I’ve been impressed with the growth. I never had any idea it would grow this fast.”
Despite the success of her Southside Lansing business, Haubert says she’s not ready for employees.
“I’m not completely comfortable with having employees,” she says. “I might explore the idea of independent contractors in the future.”
Haubert gives discounts to those sheltering animals and has pledged to donate five percent of all profits to the Capital Area Humane Society and the Animal Placement Bureau.
