Tax resolution service moves headquarters and staff of three to downtown Lansing

There's a new business in Lansing with a goal to only have you as a customer one time around.

As the vice president of ALG Tax Solutions, Mark Hampton and founding partner A.J. Gross focus on providing clients with tax resolution, tax audit and litigation services, and tax preparation during the tax season. He's here, he says, to help you fight the IRS so you can focus on business.

"We have a revolving clientele," says Hampton. "We work with a client once and hope you're done."

Founded in Howell in 2012, ALG moved its headquarters to downtown's Capital Hall Building at 115 W. Allegan in November 2015, while continuing to serve southeastern Michigan through six virtual offices. Every day, the staff of three is on the phone with the IRS, working to resolve problems on behalf or their clients, or helping to educate clients about the options they may have.

"A lot of the tax resolution industry is built on the fear that the IRS is coming to get you," says Hampton. "We're much more education-based and not fear-focused. We're here to help people know what to expect and what to do next."

ALG Tax Solutions uses tools like DropBox, email, phone and mail to share information with clients throughout Michigan and the United States. A unique "IRS letter decoder" tool on the ALG website can also help potential clients understand the meaning behind communications they have received from the IRS. Clients can meet in Lansing, or at one of ALG's virtual offices in Ann Arbor, Howell, Detroit, Southfield, Novi or Troy by appointment.

"Having an office is a plus, since lots of people don't feel comfortable about hiring someone until they meet with them," says Hampton. "But we actually only meet with about 30 percent of our clients face-to-face. We have clients from all over the U.S. It's just the way of the world now."

ALG Tax Solutions has a revolving clientele of about 75, and has prepared about 175 returns in the past two years. Clients are split 50-50 between individuals and businesses, with the majority being small companies. Depending on the tax season, Hampton says ALG may bring on one to two additional staff to help with accounts, with the potential of one going full-time in the upcoming year.
