The City of East Lansing is
looking to add a new Fraternity-Sorority Historic District in an effort
to preserve some of the city’s historic Greek buildings.
According to excerpts from the article:
“It’s
really an intriguing idea,” Councilmember Roger Peters said. “All of
our other historic districts have geographical boundaries, and this one
would be unique in the sense that it’s based on a theme, and that’s
greek houses.”
Many of the greek houses have
distinct architecture and interesting history, which contribute to the
distinctive character of the city, he said.
The
idea for a separate historic district formed because, about four years
ago, there was some concern that if fraternities or sororities were not
getting enough members, they might try to sell the buildings, said Ron
Springer, community development analyst for East Lansing.
