Mid Michigan tradition raises funds for college

Every year, hundreds of people gather to help raise money for a mid-Michigan institution. More than 750 people attended last year’s fundraiser alone, raising more than $100,000 for Mid Michigan College.

Tickets are now on sale for this year’s A Northern Tradition, the annual fundraiser that benefits the college, raising money that goes toward a bevy of causes, including student scholarships, facility improvements, local youth programs, and more.

Now in its 18th year, the 2019 A Northern Tradition is scheduled for April 14 at Jay’s Sporting Goods in Clare. The event has raised more than $1.6 million since its first year.

"This year’s event promises to be exceptional," says Scott Mertes, Vice President of Community Outreach & Advancement at Mid Michigan College.

"We’re thrilled to welcome our special guest and artist, while offering a one-of-a-kind evening to attendees."

The special guest is Jeff Chadwick, a former NFL wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams, and Seattle Seahawks. The current Clare resident will share football stories and sign autographs for attendees.

For each $50 ticket, attendees receive a $25 gift certificate to Jay’s Sporting Goods and a chance at a $1,000 gift certificate to Jay’s. Attendees will also receive a commemorative art print from artist Robin Murray, a resident of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The print, titled Michigan Royals, features a 12-point bull elk.

Area restaurants will be serving free appetizers and desserts. Entertainment includes live music and fly-tying demonstrations, among others.

Jay’s Sporting Goods is located at 8800 S. Clare Ave. in Clare.
