Central Michigan University opens up campus to community events: Haunted tours, international poets

Central Michigan University is hosting several community events that are free and open to the public in the upcoming weeks.

Halloween on campus: For fans of the spooky and haunted history of the university, Legends of the Dark returns for its 23rd year. The now yearly tradition is a tour of the haunted campus, led by ghouls and featuring visits to departed CMU students.

Proceeds from the event go to the Isabella County Restoration House in support of its services offered to the homeless citizens of Isabella County.

Legends of the Dark occurs Wednesday, Oct. 24, Thursday, Oct. 25, and Friday, Oct. 26 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. each night. The hour long tour leaves from the Down Under Food Court in the Bovee University Center every 10 minutes.

Tickets are $5 at the door and $4 in advance at Trout Hall.

International poet arrives: In news far less scary, German poet Eva Christina Zeller will be visiting Central Michigan University as part of the Meijer Visiting Writers Series.

Zeller is a creative writing professor at the Leibniz College at the University of Tübingen in Germany. She has published both poetry and plays, and has won awards that include the prestigious Thaddaüs-Troll-Award and the Baden-Württemberg Prize for the Support of Writers.

On Wednesday, Oct. 31, Zeller will take part in a roundtable discussion called Poetic Translations, examining various aspects of translating poetry into different languages.

The event takes place at 4:30 p.m. in Room 332 at Pearce Hall.

The following day, Thursday, Nov. 1, Zeller will give a reading of her work in both German and English.

The event takes place at 8 p.m. in the Baber Room at Park Library.

Both events are free and open to the public.
