The Green Spot Pub welcomes new owner

Some things are perfect just the way they are.

That’s how Jim Holton feels about his newly purchased establishment, The Green Spot Pub, which has been a fixture in the Mt. Pleasant community for more than 70 years.

The Irish pub, located at 808 N. Mission Street, was formerly owned by Mike Faulkner who purchased the bar in 1994.

Faulkner recently announced his retirement and when he began talking about selling the pub, Holton says he simply lent his friend a helping hand, offering suggestions for who might be interested in buying. Eventually, his own interest piqued.

“As I spent some time in there enjoying lunches and dinner, noticing the food that was coming out and the people really enjoying that, I said, you know, this could fall right into what I know best — and that’s restauranting,” says Holton.

Holton also owns various other establishments including Mt. Pleasant restaurants, Mountain Town Station and Summit Smokehouse & Tap Room. He says he’s looking forward to carrying on a Mt. Pleasant legacy.

“You wouldn't think The Green Spot would have such a following, but it does,” says Holton. “I knew that coming into it, so right when I got in there, on the ground running just to keep it exactly the way it is. If I can improve upon it, I'll try to improve upon it, but Mike did a great job.”

The biggest question Holton says he receives is “What are you going to change?” As far as the menu, the staff, and the design, he says there are no changes in the works, but if he did want to make a change, it wouldn’t be up to him alone.

“I told the staff you'll know if I'm going to make some changes,” says Holton. “I'll ask your opinion to see if it's a good idea or not, then we'll move forward as a team together because they're the reason The Green Spot is so successful.”
