Chalk Fest brings live art to Zeeland

At Zeeland’s fourth Chalk Fest, Friday, Aug 11, artists will use chalk as their medium and the streets as their canvas.

“The 2023 Chalk Fest will be our biggest yet! We have 11 artists coming to show their talent,” says Zeeland Event Coordinator Kerri VanDorp. “This event is so great for all ages to appreciate talented artists.”

The public will be able to stroll Elm Street between Cherry Street and Main Avenue to watch the artists actively working on their pieces from 1 to 4 p.m. From 4 to 8 p.m., audiences will be able to view the finished products, speak with the artists, listen to live music, play outdoor games, grab dinner from one of the food trucks,  as well as vote for their favorite artwork during the free event.

The winner will be announced on social media Friday evening.

Artists will create pieces that are 6-foot-square along the street.

“This is a great way to expose young children to appreciate art in a different form! The artists for the event range from teens to adults as well as professional training and self-taught,” according to a release from the city.

The artists being featured at the event are:  Mary Bent-Buist, Hudsonville; Tahleez Bartels, Zeeland; Carly Schaub, Pierson; Danae Wilson, Caledonia; Emily Miller, Grand Rapids; Rachel Murry, Grand Rapids; Gwendolyn Russel, Zeeland; Ella Pettit, Byron Center; Jonathan Buggs, La Porte, Ind.; Esther Heethuis, Grand Rapids; and Elisha Mayes, Battle Creek.

The Zeeland Board of Public Works, Zeeland Ace Hardware, Rachel Karhoff — State Farm Insurance, 4Front Credit Union and Don’s Flowers and Gifts sponsored this year’s events.
