Nonprofit that breaks down barriers for girls wins free marketing help

After reviewing applications from Michigan nonprofit and for-profit companies, Muskegon-based marketing firm Revel has selected Kalamazoo nonprofit Girls Build Kalamazoo as the recipient of a free marketing makeover during its first 24-hour marketing marathon on Giving Tuesday.

The event, labeled by Revel as “Good Tuesday,” will put all of its 13 team members in its downtown Muskegon office from 8 a.m. Nov. 28 through 8 a.m. Nov. 29 to execute a comprehensive marketing plan, free of charge, for Girls Build Kalamazoo. In a single day, the whirlwind campaign will go from concept to completion.

“Girls Build Kalamazoo is grateful to be the recipient of Revel’s Good Tuesday give-back,” says Twala Lockett-Jones, Girls Build Kalamazoo founder. “As a newer organization, it is vital to our growth and sustainability that our story is shared widely and that our messaging is clear and concise. We are excited for Revel to help us achieve our marketing objectives.”

Lockett-Jones launched the non-profit in 2020 to help middle schoolers and high schoolers explore, engage, and excel in the fields of construction and trades, as well as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and entrepreneurship.

Part of Giving Tuesday

This 24-hour marketing marathon is directly inspired by Giving Tuesday, a global philanthropic movement that takes place on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. It encourages people to shift their focus from Black Friday and purchasing to charitable giving and acts of kindness. The day promotes coming together to support various causes and nonprofit organizations.

The contest drew 30 applications. Priority was given to nonprofits and for-profit businesses promoting philanthropic causes.

"We're thrilled to have Girls Build Kalamazoo as the recipient for Good Tuesday," says Revel partner and CEO Jason Piasecki. "Their cause is near and dear to me, having two daughters in college pursuing STEM careers."

The organization was nominated by Stephanie Horka, a Girls Build Kalamazoo supporter and Revel client.

"I recommended Girls Build Kalamazoo because I truly believe in their organization," says Horka, project manager at Workpack Solutions, a software provider for the packaging industry.

Piasecki says Revel’s mission “is to make a difference in the lives of our team, the clients we serve, and the communities where we do business. This initiative encompasses all three of those aspects. We're excited to give a worthy organization the kind of marketing it deserves. Projects like this are why I get out of bed to go to work every day.”

Revel intends to meet with Girls Build Kalamazoo soon to discuss the organization’s marketing needs.

The entire race-against-the-clock experience will be documented on social media. The public is encouraged to follow along on Revel’s social pages on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
