Have you ever wondered what happens to your old carpet when you have a new one installed? Quite likely, it's brought to the local landfill to be buried with the rest of the garbage.
That is, of course, unless you use
Cash n Carry Flooring in Traverse City. You see, owner Tim Hyland, who has been in the business for more than 20 years before opening his newest store just five months ago, is a big believer in sustainability. He recycles everything from cardboard to wood to anything else he can have recycled and reused.
And, now, thanks to working with Carpet Landfill Elimination and Recycling, his company is now the first carpet store in Michigan to be zero waste.
"We use American Waste for our everyday cardboard, wood, et cetera, which is all recycled at their plant," Hyland says. "Carpet was the last piece of the puzzle to make us zero waste."
Cash n Carry Flooring has four employees and recycles carpet and padding from both its commercial and residential jobs. Hopefully it's a trend they have started, since approximately four percent of waste in this country's landfills happens to be carpeting, according to the Carpet America Recovery Effort.
