A Northwest Michigan man is doing his part to help senior golfers keep their drives going the distance thanks to his most recent innovation--a lighter and more efficient driver.
John Muir, who resides in Cedar and owns and operates the website
Clubmaker Online, specializes in re-shafting clubs, selling components and building high-performance drivers. His latest invention is the Traverse, a driver he named after his favorite area in Michigan. The Traverse uses components that are 15- to 20-percent lighter than a standard driver. It was designed specifically for recreational golfers, especially senior and women golfers.
"A lightweight driver can help most golfers increase swing speed, ball speed and add considerable distance," said Muir. "Five to 10 additional yards would be typical, but many have written me of adding 20 to 25 yards to their drives. It's also nice for seniors that may start to wear out towards the end of a round. A 15- to 20-percent weight reduction really helps."
The driver is available through Muir's newest website,
The Driver Studio. In addition, Muir hopes to be selling the driver locally at
The Old Course at Sugarloaf. He's planning on having a few demo days so golfers can sample the driver and information for that can be obtained by emailing Muir or calling him at 810-923-7396.
The Traverse, which features a red Japanese-style logo on the sole of the club that is the Kanji symbol for "cherry blossom," isn't going to be Muir's last foray into club making. He's currently considering making a matching lightweight fairway wood design.
The cost of the driver is $275.
